Full steam ahead for Sheffield Half Marathon entries

It’s full steam ahead for the 2010 SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon, with 50 per cent more people signed up to the race than this time last year.

The turn of the New Year saw entry numbers storm to 1,800 runners, with numbers up by 600 people compared to January 2009.

The race on 25 April is one of the biggest participation events in Sheffield and the entry limit of 5,500 runners looks likely to be met again this year.

Ian Thomas, entries co-ordinator for the Half Marathon, said: “It’s great to see people are signing up at the quickest ever rate. Year on year the race is improving in popularity as the word spreads about the scenic course, fantastic crowd support, and the wonderful charities we donate to.

“But we are still urging people to run for one of our ten chosen local charities and make this our most successful marathon to date. The charities give hundreds of hours of volunteer support in the lead up to the race and on race day so hopefully we can raise the biggest amount yet for them, because without their help the race would collapse.”

The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place on 25 April 2010 at Sheffield International Venues managed facility Don Valley Stadium from 9:30am.

The 10 chosen charities for this year’s event are Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Association South Yorkshire, Macmillan Cancer Support, Myasthenia Gravis Association, RSPCA Sheffield, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
