Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice: Money well spent
Thursday, 4th Mar 2010 - 5:59pm
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice provides care to children who are not expected to live to adulthood. Our hospice currently helps over one hundred children in the region, with more referrals each week. It costs £2.5 million every year to provide this support, and our charity receives no statutory funding from the government. Money raised by runners of the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon is crucial to our success. This year’s money will be used for some very important projects at the hospice.
We hope to purchase a wheelchair accessible minibus to take children on trips and outings.
Part of our holistic care plan is to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting conditions, which includes taking them to places they can’t normally visit, like the seaside or the cinema. Benefits of experiencing opportunities from everyday family life are vast. With supportive knowledgeable carers, the trips stimulate the children and form an important part of social inclusion, bringing a degree of normality to an otherwise sometimes limited existence.
We have also employed a Sibling Support Worker to work with brothers and sisters of the poorly children, both during their stays at the hospice, in the community and after bereavement. This is a very important part of our work, and is key in helping families adjust to the challenges of caring for a child with a life-limiting condition. Sponsorship money raised by runners of the Sheffield Half Marathon will go towards supporting these two key projects and also to continuing supporting families who need our help. We would like to thank all the runners for their support, and wish everyone the best of luck for their training and on the day.
