Entertainment keeping you going on race day - Friday, 16th Apr 2010 - 5:45pm
As we edge ever closer to the big race day, we can now reveal who will be entertaining both runners and spectators to keep everybody pumped up and energized until the finish line. The first race at the stadium will be our first ever Mascot Race, when mascots from our ten benefitting charities along with some special guests, will jostle for position in a 60m dash at 9am. Teenage Cancer Trust: What we do on race day - Monday, 29th Mar 2010 - 3:06pm
Last year was Teenage Cancer Trust’s first year as one of the ten chosen charities for the Sheffield Half Marathon, and what an exciting day it was. Race day is an early start for all involved, and as you drive up to the stadium there is a sense of excitement in the air with roads closed and signs for traffic diversions placed along the road side. Macmillan Cancer Support helps cancer sufferers on a daily basis. We are currently raising money in Sheffield to fund a Macmillan Nurse specialising in bowel cancer based at the Hallamshire Hospital as well as eight Macmillan professionals that provide expert care and support for people living with cancer and their families. Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind: 150 for 150 - Monday, 8th Mar 2010 - 5:48pm
To celebrate 150 years of our charity, we are building a team of 150 people to run the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon to raise sponsorship for us in this, our significant landmark year. Loss of sight has no criteria and it affects all ages. The youngest registered with the Society is six-months-old and at the other extreme, our oldest member is 105-years-old and lives at our residential home for the blind at Crosspool. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice provides care to children who are not expected to live to adulthood. Our hospice currently helps over one hundred children in the region, with more referrals each week. It costs £2.5 million every year to provide this support, and our charity receives no statutory funding from the government. Members of The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre (S. Yorks) Ltd love the buzz of the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon. It’s absolutely electric – there is an adrenalin rush, a mild feeling of panic and, at the end of the marathon, a fantastic feeling of euphoria – and this is only our volunteers helping on the day! Recently, we at the Sheffield branch of Marie Curie Cancer Care have had a new addition to our Daffodil Running Team in 26-year-old Ricky Nos from Sharrow Vale. You may have seen Ricky’s face splashed in the local papers. Aptly dubbed an ‘adrenalin junkie’ by the Sheffield Star and the Sheffield Telegraph, Ricky has kicked his hobbies of rock climbing and snowboarding to one side to run the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon. I have worked for the RSPCA for a number of years now and one of the first things many people say to me is 'I love animals, I'd love to work with them'. It’s true for everyone at the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre in Attercliffe. But apart from saving animals, the thing I am most proud of is the team of people that I work with. Snow, snow everywhere was the case last week. It did not stop many of you braving the elements to keep up your training. Running on snow gives a new dimension to stamina building. Great, just when you are finishing a 13.1 mile run someone takes your picture! Just what you need. But this is not the only time you will have been photographed along the route. We have just signed a new deal with www.Marathon-Photos.com to be the official event photographs again.
